Montpelier, Vt. -- October 5, 2005 -- Governor Jim Douglas, and more than 4,000 students across Vermont at 23 different schools, walked to school on Wednesday, October 5, to promote health, safety, physical activity and concern for the environment.
"Our kids continue to make healthier choices overall, and walking to school is a great way to jump-start the day," said Gov. Jim Douglas. "We must continue to promote opportunities for kids to experience the wellbeing that comes with physical activity. Walk to School Day is one positive way to get that message across".
Supporting Walk to School Day is part of the Governor's Fit and Healthy Kids Initiative, a comprehensive approach to promote healthy eating and increased physical activity among children and families. Walk to School Day is now in its ninth year nationwide and parents and community leaders from approximately 3,500 schools in all 50 states will participate.
