Governor Douglas Flag Day Slideshow

Monday, June 14, 2004, Montpelier, Vt.-- Governor Jim Douglas presented medals to 127 of Vermont's veterans in a ceremony on the Statehouse lawn in Montpelier. Governor Douglas honored veterans with service from World War II up to the current war in Iraq. In addition, the families of twenty-one deceased veterans received medals.

Two medals honor veterans who entered military service from Vermont. The bronze Vermont Veterans' Medal recognizes veterans who received an honorable discharge. The silver Vermont Distinguished Service Medal recognizes those who served honorably in a combat theater.

"All of you here today—and those who are unable to be with us—represent what is best about America," Governor Douglas said. "We are a nation of hope, of opportunity and of unfaltering commitment to individual liberty and freedom. American's stand together for that which is right and just, and we are gathered together today to honor those who through their service have stood up to protect America and our ideals."
