Governor Phil Scott Appoints Rory Thibault as Interim Washington County State’s Attorney

09 January 2018

Montpelier, Vt. – Governor Phil Scott today announced the appointment of Rory Thibault as interim Washington County state’s attorney.

Thibault’s appointment fills the vacancy after former State’s Attorney Scott Williams resigned on Monday. He was sworn in by Governor Scott Tuesday morning to ensure continuity in leadership at the Washington County State’s Attorney’s Office.

“Rory brings extensive experience to this role, and he will be a strong leader as the Washington County State’s Attorney’s Office continues its critical work to seek justice for Vermonters,” said Governor Scott.

Thibault previously served as Washington County’s chief deputy state’s attorney, and most recently as an assistant attorney general at the Vermont Attorney General’s Office. He brings more than seven years of litigation experience, including with the Judge Advocate General's Corps for the U.S. Army.

Vermont Governors appoint State’s Attorney vacancies based on the recommendations of county political parties, so this will be an interim appointment, while Governor Scott awaits recommendations from the Washington County Democratic Committee.
