Rare Disease Day
State of Vermont
Executive Department
A Proclamation
Whereas, there are nearly 7,000 diseases and conditions considered rare, each affecting fewer than 200,000 Americans; and
Whereas, while they each affect a relatively small segment of the population, rare diseases as a group affect almost 30 million Americans; and
Whereas, many rare diseases are serious and debilitating conditions that have a significant impact on the lives of those affected; and
Whereas, over 15 million Americans with rare diseases are unable to get treatment because condition specific medication and procedures are unavailable; and
Whereas, individuals and families affected by rare diseases often experience problems such as a sense of isolation, difficulty receiving a timely and accurate diagnosis and few treatment options; and
Whereas, thousands of Vermonters suffer from rare diseases; and
Whereas, the National Organization for Rare Disorders organizes the national observance of Rare Disease Day annually on the last day of February;
Now, Therefore, I, Peter Shumlin, Governor, do hereby proclaim February 28, A.D. 2011 as
Rare Disease Day
in Vermont and urge Vermonters to work together to raise awareness
of the rare diseases that affect many of our friends and neighbors.
Given under my hand and the Great Seal of the State of
Vermont on this __ day of February, A.D. 2011
