GOVERNOR PHIL SCOTT PROCLAIMS FEBRUARY AS CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION MONTH IN VERMONT

February 7, 2018

Montpelier, Vt. – Governor Phil Scott signed a proclamation, declaring February as Career and Technical Education (CTE) month in Vermont. This designation recognizes the importance of career and technical education programs in Vermont’s K-12 education system, and the role they play in preparing Vermont’s kids for the workforce.

“Today’s students will soon be tomorrow’s engineers, farmers, and educators, and more importantly, Vermont’s future business leaders and decision-makers,” said Gov. Scott. “I believe investing in technical education and workforce readiness training is an essential step towards strengthening Vermont’s workforce and economy for years to come.”

“Providing students with exciting and valuable learning opportunities, including workforce training programs in fields of their choice, can incentivize students to follow through with their education, and acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to increase their chances of employment after school,” said Education Secretary Rebecca Holcombe.

The Scott Administration has focused on building a Cradle-to-Career continuum of learning – a commitment to transform the education system by investing in students’ entire academic career – from early care and learning to K-12 to higher education and adult learning. The Governor believes achieving this vision is critical to growing the economy, making Vermont more affordable, and protecting the most vulnerable.

The Administration, working with the Legislature, made progress towards this vision in 2017, increasing investments in the Child Care Financial Assistance Program by $2.5 million, and in the Vermont State Colleges System by $3 million. This year, Gov. Scott has proposed additional investment in adult technical education, and a focus on increased training for childcare professionals.

“I want to thank Secretary Holcombe and the Agency of Education for sponsoring this proclamation,” added Gov. Scott. “And for their ongoing work – along with our educators, private partners and businesses – to incorporate career and technical education opportunities in schools across the state.”
