Montpelier, Vt. – As Vermonters file their state income taxes this year, Governor Phil Scott is reminding taxpayers to consider “checking the box” for charitable giving on their tax forms.
On Form IN-111 Vermont taxpayers can direct any portion of their tax refunds or tax payments to support one or more of four Vermont charitable organizations that have been specifically named in Vermont law:
• Green Up Vermont;
• Nongame Wildlife Fund;
• Vermont Children’s Trust Fund; and
• Vermont Veterans Fund
“One thing that makes Vermont so special is our sense of community, and our willingness to help our neighbors,” said Gov. Scott, “I know many Vermonters are generous throughout the year, but the opportunity to check the box on tax filings presents another way to give back to these four important causes, which reflect our state’s values and support our priorities.”
To further encourage charitable giving, Gov. Scott’s recently announced tax reform proposal includes a five percent tax credit for charitable contributions to help continue Vermont’s culture of generosity and the connection between charitable organizations and the communities they serve.
