Montpelier, Vt.— Governor Phil Scott issued the following statement in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day:
“Martin Luther King, Jr. inspired generations of Americans to fight for justice and equality. From Montgomery to Selma to Washington and beyond, his leadership helped to propel a movement for a more equitable and inclusive society. I believe now—more than ever—we must recommit to that vision. Dr. King’s work and the efforts of those he inspired are as important today, when progress is threatened by partisanship and polarization.
“We are all responsible for building a more just state and nation, and we owe it to one another and those who came before us to do so with respect and unity. Only by working together, pulling in the same direction and committing to something bigger than ourselves, can we truly honor Dr. King’s legacy.
“This means speaking up for our friends and neighbors when they experience discrimination. It means supporting policies that will reduce inequality. Because ultimately, it is our actions, not only our words, that will bring us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a just America.”
