Montpelier, Vt. – Governor Phil Scott today issued the following statement in response to the House passing H.906, an act relating to professional licensing for service members and veterans:
“In my State of the State Address, I outlined a legislative package that would help grow our economy, make Vermont more competitive with other states and expand our workforce, while supporting the Vermont National Guard and honoring those who have bravely served our country in the armed forces.
“This package included expanding Vermont’s recognition of the skills and training military service members receive while in the armed services, assisting their transition to the civilian workforce upon retirement from the military. This type of licensing reciprocity would help attract more people to stay in – and move to – Vermont at a time when we need to grow our labor force.
“I am very pleased to see the House pass this legislation today, and appreciate their willingness to work closely with my Administration and the Office of Professional Regulation on this important issue. This work helped identify targeted professions in which military training aligns closely with licensing requirements for specific civilian professions in Vermont. The legislation will provide direct pathways to licensure for these individuals, enabling them to enter the labor force more quickly, and potentially attract service members to Vermont.
“In addition to licensing reciprocity, I’ve also called for leveling the playing field with other states by offering tuition-free college in Vermont for those who commit to serve in our National Guard and eliminating the state income tax on military pensions.
“I look forward to continuing our work with the Legislature on these other proposals and hope to sign each of them into law this session.”
