Thanksgiving Day Statement from Governor Phil Scott

November 28, 2019

Governor Phil Scott today issued the following statement:

“I want to wish all Vermonters a happy and safe Thanksgiving Day and holiday weekend.

“This is the time of year where we have an opportunity to take a step back to spend time with family and friends, and to reflect on the good going on all around us.

“While it may not always feel like it, there is so much that unites us as Vermonters and Americans. I believe the things we have in common – as mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, daughters and sons, friends and neighbors – are what inspires us to do good things, like helping others in times of need. Celebrating these bonds – and all the good that comes from them – can help bridge the gap between our differences. Recognizing the good in our lives, our communities, and in each other helps expand civility and respect, reduce political polarization, and extinguish the embers of hate that divide us.

“Being grateful for what we have, and celebrating one of our country’s oldest traditions, is also a time to acknowledge we have more work to do to achieve equity in our country.

“And it’s a time of year when we tend to think more about helping and supporting our neighbors. This sense of community is part of what makes Vermont so special. But we don’t have to wait for the holiday season to do good, and I know many across the state who carry this spirit throughout the year.

“So, let’s recommit to doing good, focusing on what unites us before we look for what divides us, and to being part of something bigger than ourselves.

“Finally, I want to thank those who serve, or have served, in our military - with special thanks to those who can’t be with their families for the holidays. I also want to thank first responders, law enforcement, fire fighters, EMTs, road crews, doctors, nurses and all who can’t be with their loved ones during special occasions, because they’re working to keep us safe.

“Again, I wish you all a very happy and safe Thanksgiving and hope you’ll join me in celebrating all that is good - and all that our good can do - as we work together to move Vermont and our nation forward.”
